RIVERVIEW MEDICAL CENTER CANCER PROGRAM APPROVED BY THE COMMISSION ON
CANCER OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS
Hospital program demonstrates highest level of quality cancer care.
Red Bank, NJ – The cancer program at Riverview Medical Center has
received Three-Year Approval with Commendation from the Commission on
Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS). This status is
only granted to facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing
the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous
evaluation process and review of their performance. Only about 25% of
hospitals nationwide have received approval from the CoC. Riverview
joins an elite list of cancer centers that have been recognized,
including Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Mayo Clinic and Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
“Individuals facing cancer diagnosis and treatment can have confidence
in the care they receive at Riverview Medical Center,” said Denis
Fitzgerald, M.D., Medical Director of the Cancer Center at Riverview.
“This approval verifies that outstanding care and resources are
available to the residents of Central New Jersey, and best of all, it is
close to home.”
Patients who receive care at a CoC-approved cancer program such as
Riverview Medical Center have access to:
* Comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-the-art services and
equipment;
* A multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment
options;
* Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options;
* Access to cancer-related information, education and support;
* A cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and
treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up;
* Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care; and
* Quality care close to home.
Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC is a
consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival
rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting,
prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive,
quality care. Cancer patient data are reported by each CoC-approved
cancer program to a national database. Data is regularly used to monitor
and improve the quality of patient care delivered in CoC-approved cancer
programs.
